The Museum of the Oxcart Driver, located in the charming town of Venice, is the only one of its kind nationally and internationally. You will live the experience of this special tradition traveling in the oxcart with the help of an oxcart driver and a guide, both experts and very enthusiastic, who will share anecdotes as well as the story of how Venecia and all of Costa Rica were founded with the effort of the oxcart drivers and their friends, the oxen. Along with the singing of their oxcarts, they forged roads, bridges, churches and created our very own tradition of being Costa Rican that today remains active in certain areas of the national territory.
The tour will continue towards the church of Venecia, a national heritage built by hand with the help of the oxcart drivers and their oxen. The church contains precious woods, rocks and materials extracted from the area.
Venecia is one of the places that has kept alive the practices of the oxcart driver. Already for more than forty years, the oxcart drivers of Venice established the custom of parading with their oxen and their rustic carts, loaded with the products offered by this fertile and generous land. They passed in front of the small and humble church to donate their cargo as a tribute to the patron saint of the community: Our Lady of Candelaria; tradition that is preserved to date. In Venecia you can admire murals painted by local artists and take attractive photos that will make you see as part of the mural.
Our trip will continue by bus to an organic farm, Aaitiplan, owned by 8 women known as “the Aquaponic Women”. This association of female farmers is a pride for the people of Venice. These women have had the vision to grow organic products and re-teach us how to eat healthy. They are very hardworking and really proud campesinas who inspire all of us to live and eat better as well a sense of community. As they well say, they are “harvesting health for our community hand in hand with the environment”.
The trip will conclude with a delicious lunch at the home of Margalida and Orlando, a couple of local artisans who will please your palate with dishes made with organic products from their neighbors at Aatiplan. These dishes are prepared in the traditional wood-burning stove.
